NEW ORLEANS (WAFB) -

The New Orleans Saints sent out a press release this morning expressing the loss they feel for former head coach Bum Phillips.

New Orleans Saints Owner and Chairman of the Board Tom Benson said he enjoyed his time with Phillips and the team is affected by the loss. "We are saddened by the passing of Bum Phillips," he said, "I had the opportunity to work with him when I first purchased the team in 1985 and also enjoyed our friendship following his coaching career. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Debbie, Wade and the rest of his family."

Phillips served as an NFL head coach from 1975 to 1985, starting with the Houston Oilers and then closing out with the Saints from 1981 to 1985.

According to the release, Phillips lead the Saints to improve to 8-8 in 1983, as they barely missed the playoffs after the loss in the season finale. He resigned in 1985.

Phillips passed away on Friday, October 18th. He was 90 years old.
