Valley group to follow MCSO deputies and record crime sweep

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Sheriff's deputies and volunteer posse members will roam parts of the southwest Valley for their latest operation.

The office has come under fire for targeting communities with a large Hispanic population. Even catching the attention of the feds. The group Puente will be out recording stops made by MCSO.

"We'll be looking for blatant racial profiling, for how long the stops are, we're going to be looking for the types of people who are pulled over," said Carlos Garcia.

In May, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow ruled these sweeps targeted Latinos and that they were detained for an unusually long period of time. Earlier this month, Snow ruled the office will have an independent monitor to oversee the office's activities. He also ruled that deputies are to have cameras inside their cars to record their stops.

"I think he's trying to hurry up before the monitor gets here, I think he's trying to get the attention of the judge and say that he's not afraid of him," said Garcia.

Garcia says the video they recorded during other sweeps were even used in court to show instances of racial profiling.

"If we're able to find anything, that's discriminatory and racial profiling we're going to get it, take it to the judge, take it to authorities and hopefully they'll do something about it," he said.

Garcia said they'll be out as long as the deputies are making their stops.
