Controversial leader visiting Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) -

Controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is coming back to Tuskegee.

Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford invited Farrakhan for the weekend to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington D.C.

Tuskegee businessman Fredirick Franklin feels this is a good time for Farrakhan to pay a visit and lift up the town weeks after a Tuskegee University student died after getting shot and the city's continuing financial struggles.

"We need some positive messages, some hope to get us going," said Franklin.

Mayor Johnny Ford was said to be in meetings all day Thursday and "not available."

One of Farrakhan's representatives was in town early to map out this weekend's events. Ishmael Muhammad says Farrakhan will talk about issues ranging from poverty to agriculture issues in the town square on Sunday.

A number of people told WSFA 12 News they don't want Farrakhan in town this weekend. They question the motivation and added they don't want someone like him who is polarizing in Macon County. But those same folks declined to identify themselves or go on camera.

"We feel Minister Farrakhan is misunderstood and we look forward to spreading a positive message," said Muhammad.

Some will welcome Farrakhan, others will not. Either way Louis Farrakhan is coming to a divided town.
