Dice game turns fatal at Southdown Arms Apartments

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The remnants of a good time are visible on the steps to one apartment building at the Southdown Arms Apartments on Raymond Road. But the dice game going on there Thursday night went downhill quickly around midnight, when 25-year-old Ricky Smith Jr., a father to at least two children according to friends, was gunned down.

"He was like a little brother to me," says a friend of the victim, who asked not to be identified.

The friend says she heard the gunshots from another apartment building.

"About five. I also heard the car when it crashed into the building," she says.

The witness says Smith made big winnings at the dice game on the steps, and left in a car with a few others, but he was called back to the game. He came alone.

"The people that shot him were in the car with him when he crashed, and jumped out and ran, and left him there to die. It was just greed, basically. Greed," she says.

The building the car crashed into is the shell of the former office building. It burned down back in August. Jackson Fire investigators tell us that fire has been confirmed as arson. No arrests have been made for that crime.

In the past, our news room has received calls from tenants at Southdown Arms about the run-down conditions. That blight lingers, and the friend of the murder victim says things are getting worse.

"I just want the residents of Jackson to get it together. This is senseless. This is a community. Children live out here. This is a senseless act of violence," she says.

As of Friday afternoon, no arrests had been made in Smith's murder.
