MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

WSFA 12 News has confirmed that Alabama's Attorney General has a received documents from Governor Robert Bentley related to a possible an investigation into Alabama State University and has asked a district attorney to handle the matter with the support of the attorney general's office.

A spokesperson for Attorney General Luther Strange said, "Because it is prudent to ensure that there is no appearance of conflict of interest, the attorney general has recused himself."

Strange's LLC received payments from ASU for legal work before he became Alabama's Attorney General.

Gov. Bentley had a copy of the preliminary findings of a forensic audit into ASU's finances delivered to the attorney general's office earlier in the week.

The findings included allegations of conflicts of interest, questionable accounting procedures, and wasteful spending.

A spokesperson for the attorney general said the matter will be handled by a district attorney, Chris McCool, and he will be supported by the public corruption unit of the attorney general's office.
