Dollar General surprises school with $40,000 literacy grant

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

A Chambers Co. elementary school received the surprise of a lifetime from Dollar General.

Executives of the store awarded Huguley Elementary School a $40,000 literary grant. Out of 11,000 stores, the Dollar General across the street from Huguley Elementary raises the most money for literacy across the nation.

Teachers and administrators were floored by the check and are excited to put the money into their library and toward new technology.

"Elation is the right word. All the wheels are just spinning in my head about what is the biggest need first. It just excitement about all we can do and how far this money will impact the school," says Benji Mitchum, the school's principal.

School officials say they have received little to no funding for their library for six years and this money will double the number of books in the facility and serve the entire community for years to come.
