HMA's say no deal to BCBS contract offer

Posted: Updated:
FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two Rankin county hospitals say no deal to the latest offer from Blue Cross Blue Shield to end a contract lockout.

Wednesday Woman's and River Oaks Hospitals held a press conference in Flowood. This week Blue Cross Blue Shield sent an offer to reinstate network provider agreements with four of ten hospitals involved in the dispute.

Leaders for the two hospitals say the new offer has more red tape for patients, with restrictions, conditions and pre-certification requirements, limiting access to good healthcare.

The hospitals say they're ready to enter into an agreement that restores the contracts that were terminated.

Sherry Pitts, CEO for Woman's Hospital says, "We have calls everyday and we hear out in the community that they want to come here and have their babies, and have their surgery here but they can't and now they may even be faced with establishing a relationship with a new physician that doesn't work here but works somewhere else so it's a very emotional and fragile situation for the patients. "

Blue Cross Blue Shield says they will contact some hospitals with new contracts if they drop a lawsuit that has been in place since September. They also say they have concerns that some are not managing costs and are charging too much for healthcare.

The four hospitals they sent new contracts to are all outside of the Jackson metro area.
