AL bow season, voluntary game check program start Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

It's the day hunters have been waiting for, bow season opened Tuesday, along with a new voluntary program from the state.

The Alabama Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is asking for everyone who harvests a deer or turkey to please record the information in the game check program.

The state offers a smartphone app, website or phone number for hunters to report their kills.

This regulation was originally mandatory, but weeks before the season opened, it was downgraded to voluntary.

State biologists are requesting the data to better researchAlabama's deer and turkey population.

The process involves three questions: The sex of the deer or turkey, what county it was harvested from and whether it was private or public land.
