Troy responds to Freedom From Religion Foundation's claim of illegal dorm

The Newman Center The Newman Center
TROY, AL (WSFA) -

Troy University is responding to allegations that it's violating the First Amendment.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation claims a new 376-bed dorm built for religious students is against the law. When the university opened the Newman Center this year, university officials said it was open to students of all faiths.

In a letter to Troy, the group wrote that preferring religious students over nonreligious students violated state and federal housing laws.

Troy responded with its own letter saying that misunderstandings may have occurred and that "the Newman Center is not for religious students nor are students of any religious group given preference over others."

"Religious affiliation, or lack therof, is not a criterion for on-campus housing at Troy in any of its facilities," the letter stated.

The letter also stated the university doesn't keep statistics concerning the religious affiliations of students.
