Traffic caused by cruisers has people staying off the road

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

"Spin your wheels!" 4-year-old Brinklee Cooley yelled at a Cruiser.

But, for many cruisers, those wheels aren't spinning as fast as they'd like.

"Park the car, stay out of the traffic," said Sandi Nix.

Nix comes down from Georgia every year for Cruisin' the Coast and says she avoids driving at all costs.

"What we do, and that's the reason we stay here is the proximity to the mall," said Nix. "We can park the car and walk."

Others like W.L. Busha from Petal agrees.

"We've got this spot right here where we can just sit and enjoy everything coming by," said Busha. "There's a lot of activity that goes on right here where we're at."

Busha never misses Cruisin' the Coast.

"I was here for the first one. There was 318 cars, I think, for the first one and I was one of them," said Busha.

That number continues to grow, so traffic is something he stays away from. But, it's something law enforcement is dealing with.

"We're not going to have a tolerance for any traffic issues, squealing tires that sort of thing," said Sergeant Jackie Rhodes with Biloxi Police Department. "It's all fun and games until somebody loses control."

Rhodes says traffic is simply an unavoidable problem during Cruisin' the Coast. So, he advises everyone to use alternate routes and be patient.

"There are alternate routes and if you don't want to be, get involved in the middle of the traffic then please take an alternate route," said Sergeant Rhodes.

He said more barricades will be put up this weekend, blocking turn bays.
