Meth labs decrease and put Mississippi on the map

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

WLBT has uncovered active methamphetamine labs in our state have reduced more than 90% in just three years.

Back in 2010 Mississippi legislators passed House Bill 512, eliminating the sell of pseudoephedrine, which is the main ingredient in meth. One of the masterminds behind the bill says since 2010, the research numbers are astonishing.

Some believe methamphetamine is one of the biggest drug battles nationwide, but not in Mississippi.

"Mississippi is routinely the butt of all jokes. But I can tell you we are way ahead of the curve on this deal. We are way ahead of people from coast to coast and I am proud of that," says Marshall Fisher.

Mississippi is receiving national attention. The Huffington Post released an article showing total meth lab incidents in the United States. Mississippi fell in the top five of states that have the least amount of dumpsites, super labs along with shake and bake labs.

"We didn't do anything different in this state, nothing different, except put pseudoephedrine as a prescription only drug. Which it was prior to 1976," adds Fisher.

Pseudoephedrine which can be found in many common cold medicines and is one of the main ingredients in crystal meth. Executive Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Marshall Fisher, says active meth lab numbers have dropped significantly in three years.

"We've had a reduction of methamphetamine incidents in this state since 2010 of 81%, 81%. Of actual working methamphetamine labs since 2010 we've had a reduction of 97%. We've had eight operational meth labs all year this year. This same time period in 2010 we had 258 operational meth labs," says Fisher.

Before the new law was implemented in Mississippi, meth distribution was quickly spiraling out of control.

"This is a self inflicted epidemic that we can do something about. There's not many drugs we can do something about, but these numbers speak for themselves," says Fisher.

The only other state that has the same pseudoephedrine laws is Oregon. There have only been nine meth labs this year in that state.
