VOTE TODAY: Pascagoula domestic violence shelter needs help winning van

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

It's National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. With just the click of your computer mouse, you can make a difference in the lives of victims in South Mississippi. The Gulf Coast Women's Center For Non-Violence doesn't have a vehicle for its Pascagoula shelter, but winning Toyota's 100 Cars for Good contest could change all that.

The small room at the shelter for a mother and her two young children is a safe haven from domestic violence. The Gulf Coast Women's Center For Non-Violence is a place where people in desperate situations can turn for help.

"We provide them a safe place to go to first to actually come in and relax and breathe and how to deal with what they've been through," said Stacey Myers, Pascagoula shelter director.

There are two shelters one in Biloxi and the other in Pascagoula. Over in Jackson County, shelter officials said getting domestic violence victims to court, to work and other places they need to go is difficult.

Myers said, "We have no transportation there. We have our staff cars. We drive people to different locations. Doctor's appointments. Other appointments."

On October 15, South Mississippians can go to Facebook and give our local shelter their vote in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program. Shelter officials said they need the vehicle.

"If we had a vehicle we wouldn't have to pay mileage to the people using their own car and their own gas. We would be able to provide just the upkeep of the vehicle, " Myers said. "The one good thing about the Toyota program is they provide maintenance on the vehicle for three years. So the only thing we'll have to do is put gas in it which is a huge savings."

Shelter officials said domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of race, economic status or age. So they're hoping everyone will pitch in to help victims in need and vote in this contest to help the Pascagoula shelter win a free car.

The day to vote for Gulf Coast Women's Center For Non-Violence to win Toyota's 100 cars for good is October 15. You must have a Facebook account to vote. You can go on the Toyota's 100 Cars for Good Facebook now to vote.
