HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said former Harrison County jail warden Don Cabana died Monday afternoon.
Brisolara said he didn't know what caused Cabana's death, but said Cabana was in and out of the intensive care unit for a number of problems.
Cabana, who was in his late 60s, was also a former warden for Parchman, which is the Mississippi state penitentiary and maximum security prison. He spent a number of years teaching criminal justice and was also a consultant for the Harrison County jail.
Brisolara said Cabana came in as warden of the Harrison County jail right after Hurricane Katrina and retired from the jail during the first of this year.
"Don, he's really been a tremendous leader in the criminal corrections side for Mississippi for years and we are going to miss him. We're going to miss all the experience and having him here in Harrison County. He is an icon for Mississippi's correctional facilities. He raised standards, no doubt," the sheriff said. "The most important thing was the fact that he took over and came to Harrison County when we needed him the most and got us back on track and we appreciate that and we will always remember that."
No word yet on funeral arrangements.
