Mayor Sarno ready to attack Springfield violence

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Saturday afternoon, police said 33-year-old Hakeem Powell was shot and killed while walking on Stebbins Street.

The fatal shooting was the city's fourth homicide in the last three weekends and the 16th of the year.

"If you're harboring these individuals, you're running around with them, you're going to have a problem because now diplomacy is out the window for right now," stated Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Sarno did not mince words on Sunday morning when it came to the recent string of homicides in his city. The mayor said to combat the crime, he is reinstituting the city's street crime unit.

"You may remember, they'll be in military fatigues," said Sarno. "They will work with all bureaus. They will go out to root out this evil in the hot spot areas of the city of Springfield."

With the street crime unit taking the offensive, Sarno believes anyone associated with the alleged criminals could have their own issues.

"You're going to have to realize that when they start rattling the cages, [there will be trouble] if you're harboring these individuals," Sarno stated. "To the young people, if you're not doing anything wrong, you won't have a problem."

The mayor also put responsibility in the hands of parents.

"I'm telling families to stay on top of your young people," said Sarno. "Make sure they're not hanging around with the wrong people and the wrong places."
