Man, pregnant woman killed in crash

PIKE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An accident on I-55 in Pike County claimed the lives of a man, woman and unborn child and left several people in critical condition.

Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said the crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. Friday in Chatawa in the southbound lane of the interstate.

All 10 people inside the Mercury Mountaineer were ejected when it flipped.

It reportedly landed on one man thrown from the vehicle.

The victims are identified as 18-year old Tyronica J. Lewis of Osyka, 22-year-old Jenaro B. Smith, also of Osyka and Lewis' unborn child. Lewis was four and a half months pregnant.

Coroner Pittman pronounced Lewis dead around 2:45 p.m.

Smith died of his injuries sometime after 8 p.m. Friday at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Pittman said several children were also in the SUV.

Several accident victims were airlifted to University Medical Center.

At least four others are in critical condition.
