Springfield police investigating fatal afternoon shooting

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened on Stebbins Street around 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

Sgt. John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department told CBS 3 that officers were on the scene within seconds of the shooting.

Late Saturday night, Delaney identified the victim as Hakeem Powell, 33, of Springfield.

Delaney said Powell was shot once in the head while walking down Stebbins Street with two other males. At this point, police believe there was one shooter.

Powell was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to Delaney, the two people who were walking with the victim were not hurt, but they are not cooperating with police.

Investigators believe the shooting is drug related and Powell was the intended target.

Delaney said Powell has a long history with the police department.

Investigators are hoping residents will help with the case. They are asked to call the Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 with any information or to use "Text-a-Tip".

Delaney said the department will have increased patrols in the area for the rest of the weekend.

This marks the 16th homicide in the city this year.
