National Guard deactivated as Karen weakens

Posted: Updated:

As Tropical Storm Karen weakens in the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi National Guard has been deactivated to respond to the storm.

The state Emergency Operations Center remains open. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency employees and rescue crews are still on the Gulf Coast.
The National Guard's response will most likely not be needed because Karen is forecast to remain off the Mississippi coast and it has weakened in the past 24 hours.

State agencies are still on stand-by.

Plans have not changed at MEMA should Karen re-strengthen and change paths to have greater impact on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
