M-DOT preps for Karen

Posted: Updated:
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

In preparation for Tropical Storm Karen the Mississippi Department of Transportation opened their  Emergency Operations Center at their District Six Headquarters Friday.

District Six has staged crews and equipment throughout  the 14 counties they serve to deal with issues as they arise. M-DOT officials say they are prepared to deal with localized flooding especially along the coastal counties and the Highway 90 corridor.

More than 200 employees have been deployed to handle any problems with keeping the roadways passable and safe.

"Unless the storm gets too severe for our folks to be on the road we'll be out there before, during, and after the event to clear trees, put up traffic control for flooding situations, and anything else that needs doing,"said Cape Jones," District Maintenance Engineer.

Jones says he doesn't expect any evacuations from the coastal area so they don't anticipate having to use contra-flow on the highways. He advises that people stay off the roads if at all possible during the storm.
