HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Court of Appeals held court Thursday, but it wasn't in a regular courtroom.

Court was held at the Thad Cochran Center on the University of Southern Mississippi campus as part of their Court on the Road program.

"We're the only court that's qualified to do it," says Judge David Ishee. "The Supreme Court, by constitution, is required to sit in Jackson. We were created by statute in 1995, and therefore we are allowed to be a traveling court."

USM students came to listen to the two oral arguments that were presented. One was a third offense DUI case, and the other was a man who sought post-conviction relief after pleading guilty in Lamar County Circuit Court in 2006 for fondling a female child.

"I came just for more experience for what I plan to do in the future," says USM political science junior Ray Young. "I often go to circuit court downtown to get more experience, and I just feel like this would be a great opportunity to experience the appellate process of the State of Mississippi."

The Court on the Road program travels to several colleges and universities across the state, making about four trips every year.

"Really whoever invites us, we try and accommodate them," says Ishee. "We enjoy getting out of Jackson and getting around to different places and conversing with students and interacting with them."

Business for the judges is done as usual when they're on the road, and the students say it's always a learning experience.

"I came here because I usually go to circuit court to see how forensic science is applied to the court system," says USM forensic science junior Donovan Craig. "This experience will allow me to see how the courts can vary."
