Hurricane Watch issued for Mississippi

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The National Hurricane Center has put Mississippi under a hurricane watch.  Forecasters say the possibility exists that as Tropical Storm Karen tracks closer to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the area will feel hurricane force winds and rain.

As a reminder, a hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area.  A watch is usually issued 48 hours before tropical storm force winds will be felt.

Earlier this morning, FEMA Director Craig Fugate sent out a tweet.  It said that according to the Hurricane Hunters, Tropical Storm Karen formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico.  And it's packing winds of 60 miles per hour.

Here's the 4:00pm information on Tropical Storm Karen from the National Hurricane Center:

TROPICAL STORM CENTER LOCATED NEAR 23.3N 88.5W

PRESENT MOVEMENT TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST 12MPH

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE 999 MB/29.50 IN.

MAX SUSTAINED WINDS  65MPH

Our WLOX 24/7 Weather team is monitoring the track and intensity of this storm.  Meteorologists Mike Reader, Tommy Richards, Carrie Duncan and Joel Young will have updates throughout the day on WLOX and on the WLOX Facebook page. The WLOX 24/7 Weather team will be giving updates at the top of every hour on WLOX ABC and CBS.

Be sure you're checking WLOX News, WLOX.com and your WLOX Weather apps for the latest information on Tropical Storm Karen.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
