Mississippi State Fair opens

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Crowds packed the midway on the opening day at the 154th Mississippi State Fair. The sights and sounds of the annual statewide carnival beckoned families and little ones looking forward to the food and fun.

For the next 12 days the midway will come to life offering fun and adventure. There are 70 rides and about 100 food vendors.

The fair experienced record attendance recent years; more than 670,000 visitors.

"We always love to come every single year and we come to get the corn and have a good time," said Sarah Coughlin of Clinton. "We come every year and I brought my boys because we are meeting my daughter and they come every year with the same group of girls."

"It's important to the kids. they love to come, said Neetra Newsome of Jackson. "I usually bring my kids on the first day because it isn't crowded. They get to ride all the rides on the first day. They ride whatever they want to and I don't have to stand in those long lines."

"So many people come with their families over the years," said Mississippi State Fair Executive Director Billy Orr. "We get a lot of people from Monroe , from Memphis, New Orleans but of course one thing that brings them, we're in a good location and we're by far the largest fair in the deep south."

On Tuesday, October 8, kids 12 and under who wear their Halloween costumes get in free. The fair is open through Sunday, October 13.
