Aldermen kill plans for storm shelter at Gay Lemon Park

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Ocean Springs will not be building a FEMA shelter in the city. Tuesday night, the board of aldermen voted against plans to construct a $3.4 million storm shelter at Gay Lemon Park that could also double as an indoor gymnasium.

FEMA had recently offered the city a possible extension to design and build the facility after the board of aldermen struck down the plan last month. If the shelter was built, the city would have been responsible for overhead costs and operational fees.

The city will now have to reimburse FEMA $150,000 that they already spent on design and engineering fees.
