BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It was called a fitting tribute to a Biloxi teacher who spent 20 years of her life helping children succeed. On Tuesday, the Biloxi Rotary Club presented Debra Melaney with the Beverly Briscoe Award. Melaney is a fifth grade math, science, and social studies teacher at Popp's Ferry Elementary School.
Melaney was recognized for her efforts to prepare students for the Common Core State Standards, creating resources for teachers, and adapting her teaching styles to meet each student's needs.
Melaney is retiring at the end of this school year.
"It makes me feel like I still have it, that maybe I've learned some new tricks along the way that are keeping me going. This particular award, coming from a family that appreciated teachers so much, is really special," said Melaney.
The Beverly Briscoe Award honors outstanding teachers in the Biloxi School District. Melaney received a bouquet of flowers and a $1,000 check to spend as she pleases. After retiring, Melaney said she plans to continue working in education.
Melaney started her teaching career in Bay St. Louis. She was named Biloxi's Teacher of the Year in 2000. She went on to win the Fifth Congressional District Teacher of the Year honor.
