Vicksburg police arrest man for attempted murder

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Vicksburg police have arrested a man on an attempted murder charge.

According to a press release from the Vicksburg Police Department, On Saturday September 28, 2013 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Vicksburg Police executed an arrest warrant for attempted 2nd degree murder on 73-year-old James Lee Barber.

Barber was arrested at a relative's home located at 104 Brown's Alley in Vicksburg.

Mansfield Police Department in Mansfield, LA requested the assistance of Vicksburg Police in apprehending Barber.

Barber is accused of shooting his live-in-girlfriend in the back with a shotgun and fleeing the state. A weapon believed to be used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.

Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong with the assistance of the criminal investigators and the patrol division located Barber hiding in a closet at the residence.

Barber was taken into custody without incident.

Barber was processed and transported to the Warren County Jail, where he will have his extradition hearing on Monday in the Vicksburg Municipal Court.

    A puppy rescued from an alleged dog fighting ring in Wayne County last month has found a permanent loving home.  Drake, a four-month old male mixed breed, was adopted Saturday.  He had serious wounds when he and eight other dogs were seized from a property on Lacey Road in late January.  They were taken to Southern Cross Animal Rescue in Jones County to be rehabilitated.  Volunteers with SCAR said Drake made steady progress and was ready for a forever home.&nbs...
