Wells Fest brings community together

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson church is reaching out to the community with music and fellowship at the annual Wells Fest.

Wells United Methodist Church has hosted the event for 30 years in the capital city.

Church goers say the free festival is an opportunity to draw a diverse crowd for fellowship.

There were a number of live musical acts. Organizers say they lower prices on food and drinks  to allow everyone an opportunity to have a good time.

Most of all, they want to share a message of community unity.

"Sometimes people jump on us because they say it's not spiritual. You ought to see what happens at 5 o'clock or 5:30 when we make the closing circle here. You got people from Jackson Prep holding hands with somebody from the county jail, and that kind of unique diversity of people wanting to do something decent, to be fun, and to be helpful," said Pastor Keith Tonkel, Wells Memorial United Methodist Church.

Cash was collected for various area charities.
