JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Members of a local sorority are taking some bold steps to help fight obesity.

Runners and walkers crossed the finish line during Saturday morning's "Sole Stroll:Steps Toward Obesity Prevention," 5-run/walk.

The race was hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Rho Lambda Omega Chapter. It was the kick-off event to celebrate the chapter's 25th anniversary.

"Basically we want everybody to be healthy in mind, body and spirit so we thought this would be a fitting event to kick off the 25th anniversary," said Leyser Hayes, with the Rho Lambda Omega Chapter.

The race was the first 5k in Jackson hosted by an African-American dominated sorority or fraternity in Jackson.
