PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

One Petal school has come up with a new way to get children to eat their vegetables...let them grow their own at school. One day very soon, youngsters at Petal Upper Elementary School may be eating carrots, broccoli and cauliflower grown on campus, in a new vegetable garden they've just planted.

So far, they've put seeds in about a dozen raised beds.

And they're getting help from some local extension service master gardeners and Hattiesburg's Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc.

"We get to grow plants, see how it's going, water it daily and see how it gets through photosynthesis," said Anthony Stewart, a 6th grade student at the school.

"It's pretty simple, actually," said Tatum Pickett, a 5th grader. "All you do is plant a seed, water it every day and take care of it until it grows," she said.

"I'm really excited because we get to help with the cafeteria," said Deannah Gallager, who's also in the 5th grade. "So, we can bring some healthy foods in there," she said.

"We get to come outside and do extra outdoor activities and we get to grow plants, which I've never done before," said Sam Marlowe, a 6th grader.

Some special needs students at the school are also getting into the act. They've turned an old cafeteria sink into a miniature garden to grow vegetables like carrots and spinach.
