Toyota expanding production at Tupelo plant

Posted: Updated:

The world's largest automaker is increasing the number of vehicles built in the U.S. and exported to other countries. Toyota announced it will begin sending U.S. built Corolla sedans to several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, starting next year.

The vehicles will be built in Toyota's Tupelo, Mississippi plant in April 2014.

"It's good for U.S. manufacturing," said Toyota North America President Jim Lentz. "Last year we produced about 1.8 million vehicles here in North America. So over time, and part of it is a hedge strategy against yen movement, that we will make North America a much larger manufacturing hub, that we can send vehicles elsewhere."

Officials expect to export more than 75-hundred Corollas to Latin America and the Caribbean during the first sales year.
