Secretary of State updates public on Hattiesburg election

Posted: Updated:

The Secretary of State's office has updated the public about the election process thus far.

The Secretary of State's office has reported that only one of the 14 precincts was provided with a master voter list. According to the statement,  if a voter was not on the precinct poll book, poll workers could not verify their correct voting precinct without contacting the Municipal Clerk's Office. The statement said that each precinct was delivered a master voter list early this morning.

The report also said that several students at the Highland Park precinct were questioned based on their residency. According to the Secretary of State's Office, students who properly registered to vote in Hattiesburg should be allowed to cast a ballot. The statement said that to their knowledge, those students whose residency were questioned were able to cast a ballot.

According to the issued statement, several complaints were submitted regarding the conduct of poll watchers in the precincts. The Agency has advised the commissioners that any unruly poll watchers should be asked to leave by the bailiff of the precinct.

"We are seeing above-average turnout in this election, which could exceed the number of votes cast in the first mayoral election," says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann in a prepared statement.  "There is still plenty of time to cast a ballot.  We encourage all qualified voters to head to the polls by 7:00pm.  Anyone who is standing in line by 7:00pm tonight will be able to cast a ballot in this election."
