Brennan O'Keefe is 5-8, 158 pounds and has a powerful leg.
After five games, the senior has successfully kicked 27 of 27 point after touchdown attempts. He's also connected on 5 of 6 field goal tries with his longest sailing 41 yards through the uprights.
St. Martin head coach Eddie Wayne Whitehead says Brennan is a reliable all-around kicker.
Whitehead said,"He's been a really big asset to us, kick offs, punting and obviously field goals and extra points. He's been a big help."@
O'Keefe didn't get in his kicks until his junior season in 2012.
He said,"I actually played when I was a little kid for a long time and stopped when I got into high school. But I got into high school my junior year and our kicker actually got hurt. I decided to go out and kick."
Brennan decided kicking a football is in his best interest. He has traveled to various kicking camps throughout the region, camps that helped fine tune his technique.
"I also have a coach, a kicking coach over in Mobile, his name is coach Mike McCabe. I meet with him every Saturday."
At this time... O'Keefe hasn't received any college scholarship offers but his high national ranking could change that before season's end.
Another reason for Brennan's success, is winning the mental game.
O'Keefe stated,"If I miss one shake it off and pick myself up."
O'Keefe has missed only one kick in 33 PAT's and field goal attempts.
What is his future goal?
He said,"I want to be a dentist, not a kicker." When I asked him he doesn't want to be a kicker, he quickly responded. "Oh I want to kick, I want to kick, if not that I want to be a dentist."
O'Keefe and his Yellow Jacket teammates tackle Gulfport Friday night at 7 in a Region 4-6A opener and it will be one of the marquee games on the Friday Night Football Showdown on WLOX-ABC.
Another Mississippi Gulf Coast kicker, Patrick McRaney of St. Stanislaus, ranks 24th in the nation. The junior has kicked 22 of 23 point after touchdown attempts and 4 of 5 field goals for 34 points.
St. Martin senior linebacker Joey Romero ranks 13th in the nation with 11 sacks and #2 in the state.
