ObamaCare spurs lots of questions, but little real interest

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Monday night, an informational meeting was held at the Orange Grove Library regarding the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare. The healthcare law was signed by President Barack Obama back in 2010, but recent budget battles in Washington have brought the law back to the forefront of the political discussion.

With all the talk about the controversial law, a local business woman decided to hold a meeting to clear up some confusion, but turnout wasn't what she expected. A room full of empty seats is what presenters found at the important meeting.

Anne Nicholson, who works for Humana Healthcare, said she organized the event because of the many questions she gets about the reform each day.

"People ask me every day, 'Should I apply for the exchange? Should I stay where I am? How is it going to affect me?'" said Nicholson.

Questions like those went unanswered at Monday's meeting, because there was no one there to ask them. Theodore Diaz has been in the insurance business for 40 years and feels the seats left empty Monday night will be full once ObamaCare takes effect.

"People are not yet excited about the Affordable Care Act, because it hasn't affect them yet. But on October 1, the exchanges opens up, and we're going to have to start looking," said Diaz.

Diaz isn't the only person in the healthcare world facing questions from clients. Mary Buffington is the Executive Director at the Bethesda Free Clinic in Ocean Springs. Buffington said regardless of what happens with the healthcare reform, her clinic will continue to see patients for free. But as a healthcare professional, she wishes she could give them more answers.

"We are hoping information will come to us through the state or via the news media," said Buffington.

The Affordable Care Act will take effect in one week.
