Hurricane Ivan Victim Reluctantly Asks For Help

"It's terrible, really terrible," Anita Augustin says as she looks at her home.

Anita Augustin never imagined Hurricane Ivan could do such damage to her home.

"When I got back I was really upset and devastated that we didn't have a home and we'd have to go stay with somebody. We didn't want to do that," Augustin says.

Augustin also could never imagine asking anyone for help.

"I don't know if we are poor proud, or whatever you want to call it. But if we can help ourselves, we will," Augustin adds.

Augustin's mobile home suffered major damage during Hurricane Georges in 1998.

They didn't ask for assistance then, and Augustin says they haven't fully recovered.

But Hurricane Ivan is a different story. He's left their home unliveable.

Although Augustin hates to admit it, she's having to swallow her pride. Now her family needs all the help they can get.

"It wasn't a new mobile home, it was an older one. But it was our primary residence until we could get our house built," Augustin says.

But now Augustin and her family are having to pick up the pieces of their old home,  before they can even think about building their new one.

Augustin says the Red Cross is helping her family with some basis necessities, and she hopes this assistance will help her get back on track and back to being her proud self again.
