Triple play of events keeps Coast Coliseum busy this weekend

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Motorcycles and bull riding and the great outdoors. You'll find all three at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center this weekend.

Thousands of tourists and locals are expected to attend this trio of special events.

The statewide HOG convention is attracting Harley-Davison motorcycle owners and enthusiasts from across Mississippi. Mike and Carrie Fronaberger made the ride to the coast from Southaven.

"Rain or shine, either way it's going to be a good weekend. You know, we're off work, down here on a beach, having a great time," he said.

An obstacle course is among the many activities at this weekend's HOG rally.

Need a patch for your motorcycle jacket?

"We have over 2,500 different styles," said vendor Jim Shockley. He comes from Canton, Texas, which he proudly points out is home of the "largest flea market in the world."

Shockley says he loves these motorcycle shows for one big reason.

"People. It's all about the people. You meet the nicest people in the world on a motorcycle," he said, smiling.

Inside the coliseum this weekend, you can meet some of the toughest cowboys and meanest bulls in the world.

Six hundred tons of dirt are turning the concrete floor into a professional bull riding arena.

Clayton Cullen is the producer of this high energy, extreme sport show.

"This is absolutely an extreme sport, but even beyond that, it's packaged in such an entertaining format that everybody has a good time, from babies to grandmas," he explained, "Out of these chutes are going to come some 1,500 to 2,000 pound 'animal athletes' we call 'em, and boy they really are."

If you prefer your animals a little less lively, the convention center is the place to be. Taxidermists are among the many vendors in this weekend's Woods and Water Hunting and Fishing Expo.

"We have all the latest gear for fishing, hunting, camping. So, you've got to stock up. Hunting season is here, fishing season. So, come and talk to the professionals and get the best gear," said Event Manager Gina Mandrick.
