Purvis Middle School students study marine life

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Students from Purvis Middle School got out of the classroom Friday to take an up close look at the marine life in the Gulf.

The sixth grade gifted class traveled from Lamar County to Gulfport to partner with volunteers from the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. They scraped nets along the bottom of the Gulf to find out what types of creatures were swimming and crawling below the surface.

Teacher Amy Rogers says this is her second year doing the project.

"The kids learn so much from being out here, and they just love it," said Rogers.

Last year the group took a boat out to Ship Island, but plans were changed this time due to threats of inclement weather. But the students didn't seem to mind, and Rogers said the learning experience was just as educational either way.
