Byram aldermen vote to fund emergency radios

Posted: Updated:
BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Byram's fire chief says he will have to bypass the Hinds County Board of Supervisors and get citizens to foot the bill for emergency radios.

Chief Marshall Robinson says the Byram Board of Aldermen has approved $267,000 to purchase seven mobile and 35 portable radios for the fire department's seven fulltime firefighters and more than two dozen volunteers. It's needed so firefighters can communicate with all other agencies in the event of an emergency.

Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors had approved cash for the purchase out of E-911 funds, but the docket was never approved. Chief Robinson says he finally asked the Aldermen to take it up.

"We had not gotten a response from the Board. The matter was to be taken back up, the matter was never placed on the agenda officially," he says.

Chief Robinson says the new radios should be in the hands of first responders by Nov. 1.
