STAR, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Star Fire Department first responders, who helped five children trapped inside a mangled truck on Highway 49 September 1, met the four children who survived Tuesday night. There was not a dry eye at the fire department.

"The physical is getting healed, but the mental is really bad for these kids," said Katherine Chism, the children's grandmother. "And for even adults, for me. Anybody seeing babies laying like that."

"We can't repay yall. If we could I'd give yall my life for saving my babies," Jennifer Rodgers, the children's mother, told the firefighters.

The woman who made the first call to 911 says seeing the four children who survived the crash will help replace the images of the horrible accident.

"I went over to check out the children and I was just amazed at the fact that they were alive",said Wendy Grube.

For the family, the long road to recovery is not over, not for them or the children.

"Our next step is get them out of the wheelchairs and get them in walkers and get em going," said Rodgers. said.

The firemen say this emotional reunion is helping them find closure.

"When something like this happens, especially when it involves children, it takes a toll on you." said Star Fire Chief Jackie Squires.

Jennifer Rodgers is the mother of two of the children, Valerie and Shelby Lynn. She and her husband have adopted Ally and Jacob Hicks who were injured. But she says they will never forget Nathan Rodgers, who did not make it.

"It means the world to me to meet the people that sat there with these children, mine included, the ones we've got now and that they were there with them when we couldn't be there," said Rodgers. "And this is what everybody needed. It's uplifted everybody's spirits."

The children are 11, 10, 7 and 5 years old. Fifty-three year old Edward Allen Sullivan was driving the truck.  He is a convicted sex offender who was recently released from jail.
