CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte grandmother has been denied bond after she was arrested and charged after nine-month-old grandson died of a drug overdose in July.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, investigators arrested 49-year-old Charlene Workman on Tuesday and charged her with involuntary manslaughter.

Officers were called to a home along the 9500 block of Lina Ardrey Lane around 6:50 a.m. on July 22 to the report of an unresponsive child.

Nine-month-old Kaleb Lowery was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Workman had her first court appearance Wednesday. Her husband and an unidentified man showed up for support. They said nothing while they left the courtroom.

The judge appointed a public defender for Workman. She will have a bond hearing on October 2nd.

An autopsy was started by the Medical Examiner's Office. On Tuesday morning the ME's office contacted investigators and informed them that Kaleb had died as a result of an overdose of two separate drugs.

Detectives located and questioned Workman about the incident and later charged her with involuntary manslaughter.

She was transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office where she is currently in custody.

Neighbors say Workman still cares for her other grandchildren and can't believe their neighbor is behind bars.

"I feel really bad for her," Neighbor Linda Simpson said. "Because I know she is a really nice lady, and she's been taking care of her other grandchildren for several years."

During the first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon, the judge denied bond and left Workman in jail because of the charge.

She was appointed a public defender and given another court date of October 2nd.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective Tisdale is the lead detective assigned to this case.

In addition, you may also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
