Grand Jury releases report on Hinds County Jail

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County Grand Jury has given their blueprint on how to fix the jail in Raymond. Hinds County Supervisors met behind closed doors in executive session Tuesday morning to look over the findings.

The report directs county officials to hire more trained staff, and upgrade security, and make repairs to the facility, including pods A and B.

In addition, they've been told to create an inmate discipline system and reduce the population of the jail.

The Grand Jury says their recommendations were made to avoid further injuries, deaths and physical damage to the jail.

County officials say they plan to implement the changes immediately.

"We're working together, we're going to work together with all the parties involved," said District One Supervisor Robert Graham. "We're going to work together to make sure that we correct deficiencies wherever they may be."

"The report speaks for itself," said Board Attorney Pieter Teeuwissen." "Obviously our advice to the board is we work through the issues that have been identified by the grand jury, the elected officials both the board members and other elected officials who went today are all committed to improving the criminal justice system."

Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis was also at the meeting. He will have to implement the changes recommended by the grand jury. He declined to comment on their findings.

The Board of Supervisors will hold another meeting on the jail Sept 25.
