BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Southeastern and Southwestern Intergovernmental Audit Forum is being held at the Biloxi Visitor's Center this week. The keynote speaker was Gene Dodaro the Comptroller General of the United States.
He spoke to auditors and their staff from both the Southeastern and Southwestern regions.
Dodaro discussed perspectives on fiscal and performance challenges facing government. Specifically the challenges government's encounter because of slow economic growth due to budget cuts.
According to Mississippi State Auditor's Office Communications Director Brett Kittredge, Dodaro also discussed a number of the financial management and fiscal challenges that states experience. He also talked about suggestions on moving forward.
"First and foremost he gave us a update on the economic briefing and health of the country. Well there's a lot of concern with sequestration," Mississippi State Auditor Stacey Pickering said. "Anytime you have multiple internal controls in the states as it relates to the Affordable Care Act, adhering to the laws makes for a very complicated accounting environment for the nation and opens the door to fraud."
Pickering said he'll discuss the government's largest budget items--education.
"Just in Mississippi education alone makes up 43 percent of our state budget in K-12. It gets more than 62 percent when you add community colleges and senior colleges," Pickering said.
The Southeastern region is comprised of MS, AL, TN, GA, SC and Fl and the Southwestern region is, LA , NM, TX, OK and AK.
The Mississippi State Auditor's Office is hosting the three day forum at the Biloxi Visitors Center.
