STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A former lead teller at the Bank of Wiggins pled guilty Monday to embezzling money from the bank.
District Attorney Joel Smith tells us Veronica Morse stole more than $200,000 from there. Smith said Morse would create fake cash transaction tickets while she worked at the bank.
Investigators said while looking into the case, another financial red flag popped up: Evidence showed Morse deposited numerous checks into Stone County's Executive Secretary Tina Gillespie's account.
Investigators said the two were neighbors, and friends. And that the checks going into Gillespie's account were all from the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, where Gillespie worked as the executive secretary.
Police said Gillespie allegedly embezzled some $300,000 from the county. The scam is believed to have gone on for years.
Morse will receive her sentencing this Thursday at the Stone County Courthouse.
