St. Bernard Parish schools shut off water due to amoeba

Posted: Updated:

School officials in parts of south Louisiana are putting extra precautions in place after a rare brain-eating amoeba was found in one parish's water supply.

"It could be from a lack of water flow in that area," said David Peralta, St. Bernard Parish president. "We just don't know. I don't want to speculate."

The water will be turned off at all schools in St. Bernard Parish starting Monday. School officials said even though the water may be safe to drink, the concern is with younger children getting water up their noses.

Officials in Plaquemines and St. Charles parishes are also monitoring their water supplies as a precaution.
