Recommendations for schools from Action for Healthy Kids, a coalition of private and government agencies:
- Form a health advisory council involving parents, students, medical and business professionals, school administrators, police and youth-group leaders. The council should create programs on nutrition and exercise that make sense for the local community.
- Develop a comprehensive wellness policy. It should include guidelines about the foods and drinks sold on campus and about teaching students how to make good decisions about eating.
- Integrate physical activity and nutrition education into the regular school day and afterschool programs.
- Encourage staff to model healthy lifestyles, and help them by creating a wellness program to strengthen morale and reduce absenteeism.
