Rival universities up for donor challenge

Posted: Updated:
FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tailgating is kicking off a bit early this weekend! On Friday morning a tailgating party is set with college football in mind, but for a purpose much greater than an upcoming game.

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency is hosting a tailgating party at 11:30 a.m. to kick-off the 2013 Donor Challenge. The challenge is between four universities.

Jackson State University students and Alcorn State University students are competing against each other; and Ole Miss and Southern Miss students are up for the challenge too. The goal is to see which universities can register the most students as organ and tissue donors.

Just one donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance the lives of more than 50 people. WLBT had an opportunity to speak to two Mississippians who know just how important organ donations are.

"People ask you know how can you deal with losing your daughter and it just feels like she's still here you know she's here 3 times over," said mom Cynthia Camel, who donated her daughter's organs after she passed last year. "It just feels good to know that I was able to help someone matter of fact we were able to help three people and it just feels good to know I was able to help them."

"With the transplant I'm set free again I have more vigor as you say I am able to do things that I couldn't when I was taking dialysis," said Connie Dixon, Sr., who has received a kidney transplant.

Anyone is welcome to sign up as an organ and tissue donor through the 2013 Donor Challenge. For more information on registering go to the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency's website.
