FRANKLIN, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a man accused of hitting a woman while she was driving was arrested Thursday morning.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office said Phillip Jones, 25, of Gibson, is charged with simple battery. There was also a warrant for his arrest from the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office for failure to appear on a charge of failure to pay child support.

According to reports, a deputy was called out to investigate a report of a man hitting a woman on the shoulder of US 90 and later caught up to the vehicle in the Franklin area.

The deputy said the investigation revealed the woman driving and Jones got into an argument. At some point, Jones allegedly grabbed the steering wheel and forced her to pull onto the shoulder.

SMPSO reported witnesses told the investigating deputy Jones also hit the woman over and over while she was driving.

Jones was booked into the parish prison on the above charges. His bond was set at $500.
