BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge is close to completing a milestone 24 years after building its first house.

The Blackburn family's new Habitat home in north Baton Rouge will become the 300th house built by volunteers. Work began at the site Thursday morning.

Families in six Louisiana parishes have now become homeowners thanks to Habitat. Just in the last 10 years, 200 houses were built.

"We are the 49th affiliate nationwide to reach this milestone," said Lynn Clark, executive director of HHGBR. "So, we're so proud and so appreciative of generosity of the Baton Rouge community."

"It's more than we expected," said Norvel Blackburn, a future homeowner. "We've been able to meet amazing people. And, the whole process of having our own home is just something that we can take some pride in."

The Habitat for Humanity executive director added building increased after Hurricane Katrina.
