Roads reopen in Lenawee County after car and train collide

Posted: Updated:
BRITTON, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Several roads have reopened in rural Lenawee County after a car and train collided Tuesday morning.

Police say the accident happened on Poklington Road near Blissfield Highway in the village of Britton around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. They say a 54-year-old Hudson, MI man was looking down to answer his ringing cell phone and drove right into the side of the train, sending his car into a ditch, where it caught fire.

The driver was able to get out of his car before it erupted into flames. He was transported to the hospital with chest pains but is expected to be alright.

Michigan State Police say distracted driving is to blame.

"He was getting a call and he looked down to answer his phone and the next thing he knew, he struck the train," said William Strouse Jr. with the MSP. "You can travel pretty far in just a few seconds, if you're driving 45-50 miles per hour."

Police say the driver was very lucky and if he had crossed the tracks just 10 seconds earlier, the train would have T-boned his car.

After authorities moved the train, roads reopened to traffic.
