SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - South Mississippians are coming together to help clean up the coast. Volunteer registration is officially open for the 25th Annual Mississippi Coastal Cleanup.
It's the largest cleanup effort in the state. It includes more than 70 sites in Harrison, Hancock, and Jackson counties, as well as the barrier islands.
The cleanup will take place on October 19, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Groups interested in helping out are asked to register by October 7.
Those who participate will be provided with trash bags, gloves, data cards and pencils.
According to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, more than 2,500 volunteers participated in last year's event. More than 55,000 pounds of trash were collected from the Coast's mainland and barrier island beaches, as well as lakes, rivers, marshes, bayous and estuaries up to Interstate 10.
