JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

What turned out to be a child's made up story put some parents in a panic and set off a social media frenzy Thursday in the Gulf Park Estates area of Jackson County.

Thursday morning, WLOX News began getting emails and Facebook posts about an attempted child abduction. After checking with school officials, here's what we learned.

A student at the upper elementary school did report that a man had approached her as she headed to her bus. She told the bus driver who alerted the school about the incident.

School officials called the child's mother, Ocean Springs Police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. After talking with the child about what happened, the girl's mother took her out of school. A little while later, she called the school and said the little girl confessed she had made up the story.

Jerry Twiggs, Assistant Superintendent Ocean Springs School District, told WLOX News, "Our biggest fear is that somebody is going to try to take one of our kids and that's why everybody acted so quickly and took it seriously."

Still students were talking and parents who read the texts and posts were worried.

Twiggs said Thursday afternoon, Ocean Springs school officials told students on the girl's bus nothing bad had happened, and tried to reassure them about their safety.
