The following is a news release from Jones County Junior College:

Due to the situation concerning Kelton Thompson Jones County Junior College has accepted his resignation from his current position as head coach of the woman's basketball team.  We support Kelton as he examines his future and his abilities to train young athletes.

Danetra Forrest who has served as assistant coach for the Lady Bobcats for the last three seasons has been named as interim head coach, effective immediately.

"I have submitted my resignation as head basketball coach at Jones County Junior College. In light of the situation, I would like to express my deepest apologies and regret for letting down the college, the extraordinary young ladies on the team, former players, as well as the countless friends and family that have supported me throughout my career.

I will be taking some time to examine where I go from here both personally and professionally.  I plan to take the appropriate steps to get back on track to coaching, while earning back the respect and trust of all the parents, kids, and coaches in our profession.

I have dedicated the last 12 years of my life to coaching the game of basketball, and most importantly, serving and helping kids.  Growing up, coaches took an interest in me and made the difference in my life, which is the reason I chose this profession.  I refuse to let one choice define my life.  I've always preached to the kids that life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you respond to it, and I've had countless former players over the last few days remind me of this.  It is my responsibility to make sure that even in this low spot for me, I be an example of perseverance and strength to everyone who looks up to me.

The support over the last few days from friends and family, and especially my current and former players, has been tremendous, and I thank you, and love each and every one of you.  I hope everyone that knows me can find it in their heart to grant me the opportunity to reestablish the faith and trust in me that they once had." - Official statement by Kelton Thompson
