JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You're encouraged to make a trip to City Hall Thursday night if you have questions about Mayor Chokwe Lumumba's proposed water and sewer rate hike.

The council is holding a public hearing at 6:00 p.m. for you to voice your thoughts on the rate increase proposal. If approved, city water rates would go up by about 30% and sewer rates would double.

"We are trying to make a change in this administration, in this new council, to be more accessible to the people of Jackson and to make sure we give them opportunities to come before votes are taken so that they can make sure their voice is heard," said Ward 2 Councilman Melvin Priester Jr.

Some city leaders said the rate increases are necessary to help pay for and fix millions of dollars worth of water and sewer violations built up over time.
